As part of Wessex Water's Business4Life scheme, Managing Director Malcolm Wilkinson joined other Wesex Water partners and WaterAid staff on a trip to Mali to see first hand how their hard work and generosity has helped transform the lives of some of the world's poorest people. With a population of £12.4m, Mali in West Africa is one of the poorest countries in the world. Around 40% of people do not have access to safe water and 55% still do not have access to proper sanitation. WaterAid has been working in the country since 2000 to assist with its vast wate and sanitation needs.
It was a trip of two parts, some of the communities visited had absolutely no access to safe water and sanitation but other communities did and it was exciting to see where WaterAid was already working and see how the money they have raised has transformed lives and helped lift people out of poverty. In the village of Ene they say how a network of rainwater harvesting systems is giving families a reliable source of safe water through the dry season. At the opposite end of the scale they joined the people of Pigue on the3km daily walk to their nearest water source.
Bradley Holmes was chosen to go on the trip by the young people that make up the Business4Life team, part of Wessex4West Africa. The team felt this was the best way of making their year of fundraising become real and actually mean something rather than just fundraising. He was able to pass on his experiences back to the team who have been challenged by Wessex Water to raise £30,000 for Wateraid in West Africa during their fundraising year. The team have already held many fundraising actiities during their year with their final event coming up on the 29th October which is a film premier and Hollywood style ball to be held in Bristol.
