What is it?
Enpure has developed a user-friendly pasteurisation system designed to meet DETR recommendations for pasteurisation of sewage sludge, and EU Animal by-products regulation for treatment of Category 3 animal by-products.
The Enhance process "bolts on" to an existing sludge digestion plant as a pre-pasteurisation stage to provide either the DETR requirement of an assured 30 minutes retention or the EU Animal by-products requirement of 1 hour at 70 degrees C and associated pathogen kill. Alternatively the system can be designed to operate at 55 - 57 degrees C for the required time period of between 4 and 5 hours depending upon the feedstock. The Enhance process maximises the use of existing assets, and, therefore, minimises additional operational costs.
Sludge is heated in two stages either by a heat recovery heat exchanger (sludge/sludge) and secondary sludge/water heat exchangers or for certain systems two sludge/water heat exchangers in series. The secondary exchangers are heated by hot water typically from the digester heating circuit. The sludge flows into the Enhance process vessel "fill" chamber C1. Chambers C2 and C3 alternate as batch holding and batch discharging hence maintaining a continuous flow through the system.
