The wastewater treatment plant at Claudy was nearing the end of its operational life.
To comply with the requirements of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, Northern Ireland Water employed the Shearwater Consortium to provide a new wastewater treatment works. Shearwater Consortium was formed as an integrated joint venture to work in partnership with Northern Ireland Water to deliver the programme of works within the Western Region of the Integrated Wastewater Framework in Northern Ireland. It brought together the experience and resources of Enpure, Charles Brand, Geda and Atkins, all of whom have an excellent track record working in the region. Individual members of the Consortium have worked together on a variety of infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects
The brief was to design and construct a works that would serve a growing population forecasted to a design horizon of 2030. In addition to the main wastewater treatment works the contract involved replacing three small nearby wastewater treatment works (Clagan, Glenshane Road and Kinculbrack) together with Pinewood Crescent Pumping Station,
