Anglian Water serves a population of 7 million people with 1,075 sewage treatment works, 32,500 kms of sewers and produce 130,000 tds of sludge per annum treated at 28 treatment centres. Currently of the 130,000 tds pa produced 88% is recycled to Agriculture (£85-140 per TDS), 1% goes to landfill (£240 per tonne DS) and 11% other routes. Reliance on the agricultural route and the potential risk of it becoming unavailable as a result of food scares or impending NVZs has prompted AW to look at means of reducing production and making the most out of the available energy.
Currently a large proportion of the sludge is digested anaerobically with pre-pasteurisation or subsequent lime treatment to obtain “Enhanced” quality for disposal. During the next AMP period AW are proposing to replace some of their high OPEX lime plants with further digestion plant. This will result in some 16 digestion facilities in the region.
